Pesticide News:

West Nile Virus hits the Dallas / Fort Worth Metroplex!
437,000 acres aerially sprayed in Dallas County!
About 300,000 acres aerially sprayed in Denton County!

Early September, 2012:  437,000 acres of urban Dallas County and about 300,000 acres of Denton County excluding the City of Denton have been aerially sprayed with Clarke Duet, an oil-based pyrethroid insecticide.  Notably, that is about 1150 square miles, sprayed from by twin-engine aircraft flying GPS-controlled tracks with 1000 foot spacing at about 300 feet, with a droplet size said to be about 30 microns, at a wind speed of at least 1 and presumably less than 10 miles per hour, with a drift distance admitted to be "up to two miles"--but potentially further given the slow droplet fall rate.

Texas and Dallas officials repeatedly used the term "safe" to describe this aerial spray programs.  This reflects the lack of education on the part of government officials regarding pesticides and mosquito control, as there has not been a severe West Nile virus outbreak in the Metroplex since 2003.  The U.S. EPA does not allow any pesticide registrant or label to use the conclusive word "safe" to describe a pesticide, because that does not consider personal factors and can not be universally true.

We note that persons susceptible to the adverse effects from pyrethroid insecticides may include those with ragweed sensitivity.  It may be better for adults and children with uncontrolled, life threatening asthma and ragweed sensitivity to leave the area during such heavy spraying.

We expect that this West Nile virus outbreak will greatly diminish when the high-pressure weather system that normally sits over Texas in the Summer collapses in the Fall, probably in late August, as mosquito populations in Dallas drop significantly along with temperatures, though disease activity will probably not end until the Winter freeze.

“In all likelihood, we would know something within 10 days of the last spraying of the Park Cities and northeast Dallas, which are the hardest-hit areas for West Nile,” he said.

August 23, 2012:  Houston recently sprayed 63,000 urban acres (about 10 square miles) with Naled, a harder organophosphate insecticide.

DEET called a lifesaver but repellent still has its skeptics

Most health agencies say those problems have been so rare compared to billions of uneventful applications since the 1950s that they don’t justify abandoning DEET. But critics point to two lines of research.
One is from Duke University pharmacologist Mohamed Abou-Donia, who has done animal studies in the last decade that found DEET responsible for the deaths of brain cells.
The other is from France, where an international team of researchers announced in 2009 that DEET interfered with cholinesterase, an enzyme that makes the nervous system work properly, in both insects and mammals.

Dallas calls halt to aerial West Nile assault in twice-doused areas; 2 more die, in Plano and University Park

To drive home the point, Jenkins said he has begun dosing himself with a DEET-containing mosquito repellent every morning after he showers.
“People should make it part of their daily hygiene,” he suggested. “I don’t know how many ways we can say this is so important.”

DEET called a lifesaver but repellent still has its skeptics
http://www.dallasnews.com/news/local-news/20120824-deet-called-a-lifesaver-but-repellent-still-has-its-skeptics.ece
Just ask Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins. He uses DEET as others use Axe, that heavily advertised men’s toiletry that supposedly attracts women as effectively as DEET repels mosquitoes.
“When I take my shower in the morning, I put DEET on like body spray,” Jenkins said this week at an event urging people to reach for the repellent. “You’ve got to wear DEET at all times.”
Nearly every public-health agency on Earth offers similar advice, perhaps without the judge’s full-body dousing. But such entreaties raise a question: What is DEET really?
